Heat Exchanger

Heat exchangers are used to transfer heat from a heated (liquid or gaseous) coolant to the colder one.
There are many types of heat exchangers. Contact (mixing) heat exchangers ensure direct contact of heating and heated substances.
There are heat exchanges where sprayed water is used to condense water steam. Surface heat exchangers separate coolant and heated fluid by a thin wall. A part of the wall surface contacting heating and heated flows is a so-called heat exchange surface. The example of surface heat exchangers could be automotive type radiator where water of the motor cooling system and colder atmosphere air are separated by walls of a grid made of thin copper or brass radiator tubes. Flue heat exchangers burn fuel to produce hot gas flow as, for example, in steam boilers and household water heating boilers with furnace arrangement.
Various heat exchanger modifications are possible:
- shell-and-tube heat exchanger;
- heat exchanger with extended heat surface (plate-type or finned) due to application of transverse ribs;
- plate-type dismountable heat exchanger;
- pipe-in-pipe heat exchanger used in industries with high heat transfer coefficients needed to implement technological processes. These heat exchangers can be used to heat or cool fluids under high pressure and provide for easy manufacture, installation and maintenance.
